Confession time: I’m a bit of beauty product junkie. Now I could spout off on my theories of communication in fashion and the value of personal presentation and the artistry of cosmetics and the thrill of looking in the mirror every morning to see a canvas ready to become a piece of art… but sometimes I can be found wandering the aisles of Sephora or Ulta looking at tubes of mascara, testing shades of new foundations on the insides of my wrists, and putting on layers of lip stains and sticks and glosses just because it’s so fun! The next step though is me trying to rationalize myself into purchases, “I don’t have this EXACT shade in my collection,” or, “This is such an interesting texture how could I pass it up?” But thanks to my current budget I’ve been steering clear of such temptations and have pushed aside my product love for a while. It’s a heartbreaking first world problem, it really is people!
But in the midst of this minor trauma I ran across a little add for a company called Birchbox and with curiosity I gave it a click. They are a monthly beauty subscription and they said, “Every month, you’ll receive a box filled with beauty, grooming, and lifestyle samples from both up-and-coming and well known brands. Each delivery will include a mix of categories, as well as lifestyle items. Samples are generously sized, with enough product to allow you to figure out if they’re right for you. You’ll also want to take advantage of Birchbox.com, which is packed with product information and tips, including expert interviews, helpful tutorials, and engaging videos.” It is about then that I began to hear a small choir sing from the bottom of my slowly emptying makeup bag. And then it got even better, because it only cost $10 a month. That’s when the choir broke out in full force.
So I signed up and with anticipation I waited… and waited… and waited… and finally one day in my mailbox there was a little package sitting in there waiting for me. I opened the lid, peeled back the fuchsia tissue paper, and found an introductory note to this particular collection of goodies, and then one by one I unwrapped little bundles of tissue paper and untied tiny little bows to find lipstick and fragrance, bronzer and earbuds, and even more tiny treasures. Afterwards I looked up the items online to find out that most of them if purchased individually were worth about $10 a piece, and here I was with a whole bundle for the same amount!
So if you have a soft spot for playing with product and trying new beauty items, Birchbox is your next must have. I look forward to it every month now to see what fun treasures I might get, and if you click the link below you can jump on the bandwagon with me. Hope to hear about you getting your own box soon!
